New Flags at the Varnum Memorial Armory Museum!

August 15, 2015 By James Mitchell Varnum

We’ve been a bit flag challenged at the Varnum Memorial Armory Museum for quite a while now due to old and worn out equipment.  We’re happy to report that new flags have been re-mounted to the front of the armory museum with new hardware (along with solar-powered lights to keep them illuminated without wasting electricity).

Special thanks go to Varnum Trustees Brian Wallin and Patrick Donovan who (along with several volunteers) procured the equipment and mounted everything to the armory. It looks great!

Volunteers Tackle Varnum Armory Exterior Cleanup

July 18, 2015 By James Mitchell Varnum

Today was a busy day at the Varnum Memorial Armory in East Greenwich, RI! Members Mark Trimmer, Tim “Action” Jackson, and Armory Curator Patrick Donovan spent a day of “hard labor” removing weeds, stray trees, scrap wood, and discarded trash from the back of the armory and canon shed.  It looks great after all their hard work!

The Varnum Continentals have many volunteer opportunities at both the Varnum Memorial Armory and Varnum House Museum.  Click here to find out about our volunteer opportunities.

The best and easiest way to participate in our many programs is to join the Varnum Continentals (only $35 per year!).  Click here to join the Varnum Continentals.

[FEATURE ARTICLE] Thomas Nichols Letter at the Varnum Armory … a Stunning 18th-Century African American Artifact

February 11, 2021 By Patrick Donovan

Tired and tempted to just throw it all away, I stuck my hand one more time into a large moldy cardboard box filled with random receipts, notes, and other mid-20th-century detritus. It had belonged to one of our founding members who had long since passed. Digging through this old box was part of a (still on-going) gargantuan effort to properly re-pack everything in storage at the Varnum Memorial Armory Museum located at 6 Main St. here in East Greenwich, RI.
