The Varnum Memorial Armory Museum‘s curator, Patrick Donovan, will join the Rhode Island State Battle Flag Conservation Project Committee.
The State of Rhode Island has 80 incredibly historic battle flags dating from the Revolutionary War, Civil War, Spanish American War, and World War I. Unfortunately those flags were improperly displayed for many decades. Resources have been assembled to deal with the problem. Committee members include some wonderful people with professional museum management and conservation skills.
All 80 flags have now been stabilized by a conservator. They are currently in storage at an art storage facility that is well equipped to protect them from all threats. The committee will develop a collections and risk management plan for the future that will include plans to display these treasures with the public.
