Busy Summer for the Varnum Continentals Historic Marching Unit

September 10, 2019 By James Mitchell Varnum

Over the summer, the Varnum Continentals Historic Marching Unit participated in the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR)/Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) Flag Day Observation at the Dunes Club in Narragansett.

Later in the summer, Joanne Breslin (COL, Commander), David Trimmer (CAPT), John Greene (PVT), and Larry Mc Donald (LTC) presented the colors at the Nathanael Greene Birthday Celebration at the Greene Homestead in Coventry, RI. The Kentish Guards and Kingston Reds also participated in the event.

The unit was also honored to participate in East Greenwich’s Annual Summer’s End festivities in Eldredge Field, presenting the colors as the Navy Band NE Pops Ensemble played a stirring rendition of the Star Spangled Banner.

ACCEPTING NEW MEMBERS: As we prepare for our 2019-2020 season, we welcome fellow Varnum members to join our marching unit. For more information, talk with any current marching member or contact news@varnumcontinentals.org.

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Newport kicked off the start of the 2016 season for the Varnum Continentals Marching Militia.  The streets were packed, the crowds lively, and the participating Historic RI Military Commands were out in force and looking sharp. Afterwards, the Newport Artillery Company Armory was open for refreshments and a look at their impressive collection.

March with the Varnum Continentals!

As we gear up for another active season, we invite all interested members to join us for an informal evening of refreshments and comradery to find out more about joining our group on Thursday, April 28, at 7:00 PM at the Varnum Memorial Armory Museum.  Contact Joanne Breslin, Colonel Commanding, Varnum Continentals, at news@varnumcontinentals.org for more information.

[DEC. 12 DINNER MEETING] Speaker Greg Banner on The Halifax Disaster

December 3, 2022 By James Mitchell Varnum

In December 1917, a World War I ammunition ship blew up in Halifax Harbour, Nova Scotia. This massive event was listed as the largest man-made explosion in human history prior to atomic weapons and totally devastated the city. Thousands died. Our December speaker, Varnum Member Greg Banner, will describe the background, event, response, and results and discuss aspects of military, nautical, local, and emergency response history.
