Vietnam War
Rhode Island in the Vietnam War, 1959-1975
In response to the rise of conflict between North and South Vietnam in the early 1960s, American special forces were deployed to train, advise, and assist South Vietnamese allies in the early part of the sixties. The conflict exploded into a full-blown war between the United States and her allies, and the communist government of North Vietnam in August 1964 when American naval forces were allegedly fired upon by North Vietnamese patrol boats.
Soon American forces began a bombing campaign of targets in the North and American conventional ground forces were deployed in large numbers to combat the Vietcong and North Vietnamese Army. After years of brutal conflict with no end in sight, American and North Vietnamese forces signed a peace treaty in 1973 and the United States withdrew. In April 1975, North Vietnamese forces defeated the South, thus reunifying the country into one nation.

During the war, the 107th Signal Company of the Rhode Island National Guard was one of the few National Guard units to see active service in Vietnam, from 1968-1969.
The 115th Military Police Company was also called up and did guard duty at the United States Military Academy. A total of 209 Rhode Islanders died in the Vietnam Conflict.
