The Varnum Continentals has been on a mission for the last few years to conserve and safely display Rhode Island’s two Revolutionary War battle flags at the Varnum Armory Museum. We joined forces with the National Museum of the United States Army to help make this happen. Our biggest obstacle has been the need to change a Rhode Island state law that prevented the flags from being displayed outside of the Rhode Island State House.
We’re excited to announce that legislation enabling their conservation and public display has been signed into law by Governor Daniel McKee after being unanimously passed in the RI House and Senate!
This would not have happened without the tireless efforts of Rep. Michael Chippendale and his Chief of Staff, Sue Stenhouse, the Rhode Island Department of Administration, and our many supporters who helped drum up support and awareness, including Jason Roomes and the Battle of Rhode Island Association.
This was a true team effort and will be a massive WIN-WIN for all involved.
